New York’s attorney general has said he is investigating Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump’s foundation over a donation made to a political group.

“My interest in this issue really is in my capacity as regulator of non-profits in NY state”, Attorney-General Eric Schneiderman told CNN on Tuesday. And we’ve inquired into it, and we’ve had correspondence with them.

The probe gives Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton fresh ammunition as she seeks to get past questions over the propriety of her family’s own foundation and portray Trump as untrustworthy.

Mr Cheung called Mr Schneiderman’s comments “nothing more than another left-wing hit job created to distract” attention from Ms Clinton’s recent missteps on the campaign trail.

Eric Schneiderman confirmed that his office is looking into Donald Trump’s charitable foundation after concerns were raised about its impropriety.

At the time of the contribution Bondi was considering joining a $40m NY state lawsuit alleging that Trump had defrauded more than 5,000 individuals through Trump University, which was never licensed as an educational institution.

Not one to shy away from confrontation, Trump has gone on record calling Schneiderman a “hack” and a “lightweight”.

The Washington Post report says the portrait may be in the clubhouse at the Trump National Golf Club in Westchester, New York.

The attorney general launched his case against Trump University in 2013 and has called the Trump U program “a fraud from beginning to end”.

In a statement to Bloomberg, a Trump campaign aide called the inquiry a “left-wing hit job”.

Trump’s campaign has said the improper foundation check to support Bondi’s re-election was the result of a series of clerical errors, and that the billionaire businessman had meant to support Bondi with personal funds.

The foundation also donated 25,000 dollars to the attorney general of Florida in 2013 as she was considering filing fraud charges against Trump University. However, a spokesman, Whitney Ray, has maintained for months that the decision of whether or not to investigate Trump University following consumer complaints never reached the attorney general’s level and was entirely handled by staff.
