New York City extends parental leave to 6 weeks
“I remember after [my daughter] Chiara was born, just our economic reality was that Chirlane had to go back to work very quickly”, de Blasio told WNYC.

The proposal could improve a situation that can become a hardship for teachers: now, they get no paid leave after having or adopting a child unless they dip into their sick days.
“People aren’t always forthcoming”, she said.
After months of enduring tabloid photographs of vagrants urinating in public and editorials blaming the mayor for an increasing population in homeless shelters, de Blasio said his administration has focused on the problem with an array of policies.
De Blasio doesn’t think parents should have to choose between baby bonding and paying the bills.
The change doesn’t affect the city’s 300,000 unionized workers. The U.S.is one of two countries – the other Papua New Guinea – that does not guarantee some form of paid parental leave.
“Our members know how important it is to have a comprehensive paid parental leave policy that allows them to raise their families and be there for their children”, he said.
Stringer suggested that DHS transfer staff from other DHS units to oversee shelters in which children are at risk, revamp monitoring controls to ensure shelters provide families with Independent Living Plans to help them move out of the shelter system in a timely manner, ensure that apartments are inspected and that all necessary repairs are made, and ensure that DHS shelter providers sign written contracts with the city.
Paid family leave has become increasingly common in the private sector in an effort to make businesses more appealing to employees. About 60% of workers who took this leave reported it was hard making ends meet, and nearly half reported they would have taken longer leave if more pay had been available.
Feminist activist Gloria Steinem also praised the policy, noting city’s had taken the lead while the federal government’s policies for parental lead have lagged behind.
Equally pleased with the Mayor’s new policy is Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams, who noted that statewide family paid leave has been a key issue for him since the launch of his Family Friendly Brooklyn, an initiative that spotlights further issues such as breastfeeding empowerment zones and post-partum depression screening for women.
“We have to fire on all these cylinders simultaneously”, de Blasio said.

In New York, there will also be a newly trained team of about 100 police officers who primary duty will be to deal with the city’s homeless.
