Officer Sherrod Stuart, 25 years old and a member of the 40th Precinct’s plain-clothed anticrime team, was shot once in the right ankle, Police Commissioner William Bratton and Mayor Bill de Blasio said at a news conference Saturday morning.

The incident occurred at around 2:10 a.m., and Stuart is now recovering at Lincoln Hospital.

At the scene, the officers encountered a male suspect and pursued him, police said.

Bratton said Rice had five prior arrests – including one Friday on a charge of fare beating.

“He has distinguished himself already-in this situation he distinguished himself further with his quick thinking and his courageous actions-and thank God his injuries are not life-threatening”, de Blasio concluded.
