This is not the first time that the company is being threatened, there have been other cases of threats and strikes in the city, but now the protest has turned violent. The company has helped the drivers pay NT$8.59 million.

Cab driver John Phillip Bowen said it’s unfair and unsafe that Uber drivers can skirt around city business licenses, drug and criminal background checks and insurance requirements cab drivers face. “Your UberLove has been tremendous!” says Uber.

While none of the UberX drivers have stood before a judge, a court ruled in June on the separate-but-related issue of whether Uber is acting as an illegal taxi brokerage when it connects licensed taxis to passengers using the popular app.

“I do believe Uber has pulled many drivers off the roads, or many people are giving Uber some love and supporting them”.

Mostly, Uber’s arguments have worked, though legal and political challenges pop up nearly daily.

VICTORIAN taxi drivers threatening to join a rumoured global strike have been warned they would be playing right into the hands of Uber.

In Los Angeles earlier this year, an Uber driver was arrested for attempted second-degree burglary.

Authorities “have been discussing eliminating their licence”, Liang said.

Despite the PPA, Uber said in April it has provided more than a million rides in and around Philadelphia.

“Uber offers more than 7,500 New Jerseyans the ability to earn a living, putting us on par with the top 26 job creators in New Jersey”, said Uber spokeswoman Alix Angfall.

The video ends with the driver calling police, though it’s unclear how the situation is resolved as the video ends on a slide saying the UberX driver was forced to leave the area by a local business owner.

But Caranci says, “It’s complicating things coming up with new bylaws to accommodate just them and what they want to do when those things are already covered under the existing bylaws”.

The petition was followed by a high-profile TV ad highlighting how Uber has changed the lives of its drivers for the better.
