New York Giants sign veteran cornerback Leon Hall

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) – The New York Giants must think they have a shot at ending their four-year playoff drought.

Is it something the Giants at least contemplated before signing Hall?

Giants coach Ben McAdoo told the team’s website that Hall will likely play in the slot in the nickel package, but he could move around. “So I’m excited about it”, defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo said after Hall signed on Thursday.

The Giants have big money invested in veteran cornerbacks Janoris Jenkins and Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie. “It’s been a long road for me since I had my surgery in January”. He worked out for the Giants on Wednesday, flew home to Cincinnati and returned to sign his new contract.

Hall will make his practice debut with the Giants during a walkthrough scheduled for Friday.

“I think it depends on the individual”, McAdoo said when asked if being a slot corner makes a transition to safety possible to Kratch.

“They were like, ‘Why do you want the green one?’ and I was like, ‘It’s green, it looks sour, I want it, ‘” Harrison recalled with a chuckle.

While Hall’s playing time will nearly certainly be diminished with the 2016 Giants, he’ll bring in a veteran presence to a formerly lackluster secondary in NY.

“For one, I bring experience”, Hall said.

Hall has spent most of his career defending outside receivers, but Spagnuolo envisions him being matched against slot receivers. Hall is now entering his 10th season in the league, however, he has dealt with a number of injuries throughout his professional American football career in NFL. Like I said, I felt comfortable here and I felt good about where this team is going. “I even tried to run extra after practice with the guys and the trainers saw me and said ‘No, ‘ so I just want to come in to tomorrow feeling the same way I did today”.

Spagnuolo joked that with all the new additions, he is now under pressure.

The former first-round pick has started 105 games in nine National Football League seasons, recording 26 interceptions, 50 passes defended, five forced fumbles and three touchdowns in the process.

The Bengals selected Hall 18th overall in the 2007 draft, and he went on to become one of the best pass defenders in franchise history.
