New York inmates charged after 6 treated for apparent overdose

Deron odd, 31, of Grace Church Street, Port Chester, and James Graziano, 30, of Fairfax Avenue, Mount Pleasant, were charged at the jail at 1 p.m, said Kieran O’Leary, public information officer for Westchester County Police. Graziano was being held on a New York State parole violation.

Lohud reports that all six inmates were treated and returned to the jail.

A half dozen inmates from the Westchester County Jail suffered apparent drug overdoses on Sunday afternoon, police said.

Pruyne said a pipe made out of a water bottle was found in one cell and a burnt marijuana roach in another, leading to the first two inmate charges on Monday. O’Leary says the affected inmates showed symptoms ranging from being combative to being catatonic. “There were a couple who were not very responsive, kind of lethargic”.

A jail spokesman says all visitors are searched, and all prisoners are strip-searched, before and after all visits. The sickened inmates were housed in blocks in the original facility, so the sweep was originating there with the rest of the jail to follow, he said.

“But we are aware of some of the trends right now”, Mr. Pruyne said. Drugs are being investigated as a possible cause. “And with something like this, we would even consider educating our inmate population as to the dangers of something like this, taking an unknown substance”.
