Jacob deGrom likely will miss his next start because of right forearm soreness.

At least not so far.

“That’s part of the gig and that’s why we’ve got backup players here”, Mets manager Terry Collins said. Asked about deGrom’s status, Collins said, “I really can’t discuss that just yet”. The Mets’ star has allowed 30 hits and 16 earned runs in just his last 14.2 innings pitched. The Mets now sit two games back for the second wildcard spot with 27 games remaining and if this team wants to get back to the playoffs, they may need somebody like Rafael Montero, Gabriel Ynoa, or somebody else to possibly step up and make at least one start in deGrom’s place.

Marlins: RHP Andrew Cashner (4-10, 4.73) is 0-3 in five starts since Miami got him in a trade with San Diego.

He is everything we want our athletes to be as role models, he practices the right way and approaches and plays the game the right way.

– The Braves have scored seven or more runs in five consecutive home games for the first time since August 7-10, 1953, in the franchise’s first year in Milwaukee. But September call-up Michael Conforto grounded into a double play and pinch-hitter Yoenis Cespedes struck out.

Assuming deGrom does have some undisclosed issue, the only healthy established starting pitchers at the moment are Noah Syndergaard and Bartolo Colon. He singled, stole second and scored on a double by Jeff Francoeur in the fifth – when Xavier Scruggs’ RBI double brought Francoeur home – before capping the Marlins’ scoring with a three-run homer to left in the seventh. Smoker gave up Yelich’s home run. Three of those 25 will be the week after next in Washington, but the other 22 will be against the Philadelphia Phillies (seven), Atlanta Braves (six), Cincinnati Reds (three), Minnesota Twins (three) and Miami Marlins (three).

Giants outfielder Hunter Pence smashed a deep two-run homer to left-center field in the first to open the scoring against the Cubs, who rallied for a 5-4 win.

The Mets would score three runs off Miami’s bullpen including two against Fernando Rodney in the ninth.

With New York leading 2-1 and runners on first and second, Ozuna made a diving catch on Flores’ sinking line drive to end the third inning. In addition to Matz’s shoulder woes, Matt Harvey underwent season-ending surgery in July to address thoracic outlet syndrome. “I didn’t think it had anything to do with necessarily where we’re hitting him in the order”, Mattingly said.
