NEW YORK, NY – “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” has already surpassed $100
“Star Wars: The Force Awakens” brought in a galactic $238 million over the weekend, making it the biggest North American debut of all time according to studio estimates on Sunday.

It smashed the biggest Friday and biggest single-day record in North America, exceeding the 91 million USA dollars of “Deathly Hallows 2” by 29.5 million. Given the pent-up fan demand and the intense marketing, Disney had estimated that the movie would break the $100 million mark at the U.S. box office on its opening day.
A number of records were also set for advance ticket sales that led to the biggest opening ever for Star Wars: The Force Awakens. According to Walt Disney Co., that amount included $57 million during the first showings on Thursday night.
“You go into it cautiously optimistic, hopeful that they make a good movie, and with the new cast and characters they really did a good job”. The record holder for the biggest opening during the month is “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey”, which took in $85 million in domestic receipts in 2012.
Star Wars: The Force Awakens debuted day-and-date internationally in almost every market, except Greece and India, which open December 24, and China, which opens January 9, and set records in many.
“This represents a new record for the industry and portends a massive and potentially record-breaking opening day and weekend for the film”, said Dergarabedian. Reviews turned out to be stellar (95 percent on Rotten Tomatoes), as did early audience reaction, who gave the film an A CinemaScore.
The Force Awakens has a shot at becoming the highest-grossing movie of all time, analysts said. Whilst that figure is slightly behind Jurassic World’s $524m, it’s expected that once the final numbers have been calculated, Star Wars will have nabbed that record too.

“Sisters”, starring Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, pulled in $5 million on Friday from 2,962 locations, while “Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip” netted $4 million in 3,653 locations. It is setting standards that few other movies will match, at least until the next “Star Wars” movie opens.
