New York Police Commissioner William Bratton to resign
Bratton is also stepping down amid an ongoing federal corruption investigation involving high-ranking officers and City Hall demonstrations in which participants this week called for greater police accountability and Bratton’s firing.

Bratton also led the Los Angeles Police Department, helping bring about a 26% decline in violent crime in his first three years in the top job.
Bratton first became a beat cop in Boston 1970.
“He makes the transition smooth, and he continues on policy and practices that are working in New York City”, Richter said. “And there has never been a time American policing history when that is more important now”. “Crime down, terrorism issues being dealt with effectively”.
“I wish I had words for what this man has achieved”, de Blasio said, placing his hand on Bratton’s shoulder as he introduced him.
De Blasio called O’Neill “the ideal person to succeed” Bratton and cited O’Neill – the architect of the neighborhood policing program – as the leader who can sustain the “deep and consistent bond between police and community” that the city is working toward.
The mayor applauded Bratton’s achievements and strategies to keep the city safe and crime low.
State Sen. Martin J. Golden (Bensonhurst, Bay Ridge, Midwood, Fort Hamilton, Gravesend): “I want to thank NYPD Commissioner Bill Bratton for his service and dedication to the safety of citizens throughout our country”.
“Knowing who your police officers are, especially what their names are”, he said, “is one way to strengthen the bonds that exist in many places and bridge the divide where it doesn’t”.
O’Neill started as a patrolman in the transit system. He has been chief of department, the department’s highest uniformed position, since November 2014.
Bratton, 68, will be winding down a law enforcement career that had stops as chief in Boston and Los Angeles, as well as two stints as commissioner in NY.
Mayor Bill de Blasio announced police Commissioner Bill Bratton’s retirement on Tuesday.
He picked Mr Bratton as a sign that he would balance reform with further efforts to drive down crime.
Beyond that rather cryptic comment, Bratton would not go into detail about just what the opportunity entailed. From there, he moved to California, where he worked as a private consultant with Kroll Associates, the independent monitor of the Los Angeles Police Department. “Instead, he’s been trying to fend off attacks on the profession”. The approach is known as “broken windows”, shorthand for the theory that reining in small crimes helps deter more serious ones. The white officer, Daniel Pantaleo, was not indicted.
Millions March NYC applauded and took credit for Bratton’s decision.
The tensions between the mayor and police eased, but officers have been under scrutiny this summer as concern about police-minority relations has welled anew.
Bratton, 68, will be replaced by Chief of Department James O’Neill, the mayor announced at an afternoon news conference. “Again, American policing is being challenged in revolutionary ways to build trust in communities that have lost trust in us”. “They’ll know the people calling 911, they’ll know the people calling 311, they’ll know the residents, they’ll know the people that have businesses and we can have that connectivity”, Chief O’Neill said.

Later on Tuesday, the WSJ revealed that he would take a job at Teneo, a global consulting firm with ties to Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton and former President Bill Clinton. Bratton’s work had changed what people expected from a police commander.
