New York Red Bulls sign Shaun Wright-Phillips

As quoted by the New York Post, Frank Lampard-who was teammates with Wright-Phillips at Chelsea-has backed his former colleague to make a big impact should he move to the Red Bulls.

Wright-Phillips comes to the Red Bulls after spending the last four years with Queens Park Rangers who bounced between the Barclay’s Premiere League and the Championship.

“We are pleased to add Shaun to our club”, said Head Coach Jesse Marsch.

He played 36 times for England, scoring six times, between 2004 and 2010 but since leaving the Etihad Stadium for a second time in 2011 his stock has fallen dramatically.

Bradley and Shaun played together at Man City in 2004.

“SWP” began his career at Manchester City, where he performed extremely well and earned a move to Chelsea. When we evaluated the unique set of circumstances along with the quality that Shaun has, it became apparent that we needed to be aggressive about adding Shaun to our club.

Now after weeks of training with the Red Bulls, Wright-Phillips has joined his brother reportedly on a non Designated Player deal worth just $375,000 pro rata for the remainder of the season. If Shaun Wright-Phillips can stay fit and get the minutes he could fully well harness some of the potential he showed throughout his career.

It was confirmed on the New York Red Bulls website that they have signed Premier League veteran Shaun Wright-Philips.

Another European top flight player has joined MLS. Ah, it’s Bradley’s brother Shaun of course.

Taken in this past winter’s MLS SuperDraft by the Red Bulls, Bonomo initially chose to forgo the league and bounced around some opportunities in Europe but ultimately came back to the Red Bulls last week to try and latch on with the club.
