However, The Guardian reports that Mauricio Pochettino has stepped in to make a deal possible which will see Townsend join the Toon in the next 48 hours.

Newcastle United have agreed a £12m fee with Tottenham for England winger Andros Townsend.

Tottenham today accepted a £12million bid from Newcastle for Townsend, who fell out of favour at White Hart Lane late previous year.

With next year’s TV sponsorship deal reaching record levels, it would be a particularly bad season for Newcastle to endure the drop but they are now two points from safety sitting 18th in the Premier League table.

“Two of the best positions you can play in football are centre-forward and left-wing at NUFC”.

It is understood that Newcastle offered £10m earlier in January and their willingness to pay the fees in one hit gave them the advantage.

The England star is most at home on the flanks – and competition for places is now heating up at St James’ Park.

He played in a 2-0 defeat by Liverpool for their Under-21 team on Monday night in what is set to be his final appearance in a Spurs shirt.

Townsend follows Jonjo Shelvey and French midfielder Henri Saivet into St James’ Park taking Steve McClaren’s spending this month to nearly £30m with the Geordies still desperate to bring in a striker this week.

The wideman had been frozen out of the Spurs first-team after a public spat with coach Nathan Gardiner after the club’s League win over Aston Villa in November. He has been playing with the Under-21s to retain match sharpness, an experience he describes as “an absolute pleasure”.
