Newcastle United have finally ended their search for a centre half with the arrival of Grant Hanley from Blackburn Rovers, the Scottish International joins on a year deal, according to the official website.

The 24-year-old is now off to Tyneside for a medical and the Toon look like they’ve paid £5.5m for the Scottish global.

And Hanley – who made his Premier League debut aged 18 in 2010 and has appeared over 200 times for Rovers – said: ‘I’m over the moon and delighted to be here.

“I am very pleased to bring Grant Hanley to our project to add his hard work and potential to our squad”, Newcastle manager Rafa Benitez said.

The Magpies got their pre-season campaign off to an ideal start courtesy of a 0-6 thrashing of League of Ireland outfit Bohemians last weekend.

Benitez has already completed the signings of defensive duo Matz Sels and Jesus Gamez this summer, as well as Isaac Hayden, Matt Ritchie and Dwight Gayle further up the pitch.
