Meanwhile, Gamez – who had a nine-year first-team career at Malaga before joining Atletico two years ago – feels he is suited to the demands of English football.
Able to play at either full-back, centre-back, or defensive midfield, Hayden has only ever made two appearances for the Gunners – both in the League Cup.
Recent reports had suggested that the youngster could initially join the Magpies on a season-long loan before deciding on a permanent extension. The fee for the transfer has yet to be disclosed.
He added that he is “still young but I want to get as many games under my belt as I can” before finishing with “and help team bounce back to the Premier League”.
“He is also a player who can play in different positions, which is very useful”.
He told the club’s official website: “It’s great news for the club and for the fans as well because the relationship with him started really well and we hope that he will have a lot of success at the club”.
Hayden spent last season out on loan at Hull City, making 24 appearances across all competitions as Steve Bruce’s side achieved promotion to the Premier League via the playoffs.

Newcastle remain determined to bring in another defender, and are poised to enter further discussions over Grant Hanley.
