The England global has signed a five and half year deal and the fee is undisclosed. “I am so glad that it is finally done”.

Shelvey is apparently quite taken with the idea of working with Newcastle head coach Steve McClaren, choosing the Magpies over interest from Crystal Palace and Alan Pardew.

His former club Liverpool, who Shelvey left in 2013, received around £3.6million as part of a 30 per cent sell on agreement with Swansea.

Shelvey had jetted to Tyneside today to complete discussions and go through a medical.

As a result, he helped Swansea finish eighth in the Premier League and his performances were rewarded with a call up to the English national team.

The 23-year-old worldwide midfielder had fallen down the pecking order in South Wales, but he looks set to get his career back on track and stake his claim to make England’s Euro 2016 squad.

He will not be involved against Manchester United tonight but he will add the Premier League experience which McClaren hopes to add to his squad.

“I’ve not really had an opportunity to speak to Jonjo as he was doing recovery work (on Monday) but I will certainly try and catch up with him”. To ex-players like myself it’s a lot of money.

“He’s still young and you would expect a lot more to come from Jonjo Shelvey”.

However, if Shelvey is leaving to get out of the relegation battle Swansea find themseves in, he’s gone to the wrong place.
