Newcastle United ‘close’ to signing Florian Thauvin

Marseille are now apparently willing to accept a £12million bid from Newcastle, although they are eyeing up the possibility of taking Remy Cabella on loan as part of the deal.

He chose to remain in France instead of moving to St James’s Park and agreed a switch to Lille, but his career has gone backwards instead of forwards since then.

Marseille will then put the finishing touches to a season-long loan for Cabella, while they will also have an option to buy him should he impress at the club.

Cabella has set off for his medical and talks in Marseille, and Thauvin has done the opposite as Newcastle hope to conclude a deal by Thursday and he could even be in contention to figure against Manchester United this weekend.

He made the move to Marseille in summer 2013, without making a single appearance for Lille. He scored a penalty in France’s 4-0 win over Uzbekistan in the quarter-finals, scoring both French goals in their 2-1 victory against Ghana in the semi-finals.

The 22-year-old French winger’s arrival would take the Magpies spending past the £50m mark with owner Mike Ashley keen to back new boss Steve McClaren.

Some people may see this as a gamble after his rather inconsistent two-year spell at Marseille however, at 22-years-old Thauvin has a big potential.
