In total, he made 150 appearances for Newcastle before going on to enjoy spells at Sheffield Wednesday, Portsmouth and West Ham.
His agent, Steve Wraith, confirmed that Srnicek, who had been in an induced coma after collapsing while out running in the Czech Republic on 20 December, had passed away.
He recently published a book “Pavel Is a Geordie” about his years with Newcastle.
Srnicek initially signed for Newcastle in 1991 and stayed through until 1998, before returning for a short spell in the 2006/07 season.
Srnicek helped Newcastle achieve promotion to the Premier League in 1993 under Kevin Keegan and remained part of the squad as the Magpies challenged for the title in the mid-90s.
Srnicek’s name was sang out by those in attendance at St James’ Park during Newcastle’s Boxing Day match with Everton.
“It is with enormous sadness that we confirm the passing of former NUFC goalkeeper Pavel Srnicek”, the club tweeted.
Alan Shearer led the tributes to Srnicek saying: “So very, very sad to lose my friend and former teammate @PavelSrnicekUK My thoughts are with his family at this bad time”.
The Czech also listed Banik Ostrava, Brescia and Beira-Mar among his former clubs and represented his country at the European Championships in 1996 and 2000.
