Newcastle upsets Liverpool 2-0 in Premier League

Alberto Moreno’s corner was nodded down by Dejan Lovren but from three yards out Benteke somehow blazed over the bar.

“It was not a holiday game, I would say”. We made our goal, but because we weren’t good enough today, the linesman thought, ‘Don’t make world-class goals if you play this s–. Aware a side in sharper mode than Liverpool might well have punished some needless concessions of possession in central midfield, the Gallowgate End became a little restless.

“Today they were very un-composed, they lost so many easy balls, their passing was off today and this is why they didn’t create any chances and only had one shot on target”.

For Klopp, meanwhile, it’s back to the drawing board.

“We have had a few hard weeks and we had to recover after last week because the performance was not so good”, Wijnaldum said. “That’s how life is and how football is. I don’t like it but we have to go on”.

Newcastle outran their opponents on top of creating more clear cut chances and being more dynamic overall in a comprehensive 2-0 victory over their opponents.

However the Magpies upset the odds on Sunday with Georginio Wijnaldum playing a part in both goals as Newcastle won 2-0. “They do care, and there is desire”. We trained hard together and kept faith in each other.

Liverpool, who dropped Divock Origi and Daniel Sturridge – scorers of five goals between them against Southampton in midweek – to the bench, barely threatened as Wijnaldum latched onto Moussa Sissoko’s pass late on to dink a first-time effort over the advancing Mignolet. Sky Sports pundit Thierry Henry was less than impressed with his contribution.

“I know the boys wanted to [win the game] but that’s what can happen”.

“We might not get results, but it will certainly keep the crowd with us and certainly keep the spirit and give us a chance of picking up points”.

Benteke was a static presence up front and covered less ground than any of his outfield team-mates prior to his substitution. Jordan Ibe saw a piledriver to see the first half out. The England worldwide showed signs of rustiness following his time on the sidelines, dragging one angled shot wastefully wide after he was released by Adam Lallana. Moreno firing a fantastic shot into the net but the flag was raised for offside.

Things don’t get any easier for Newcastle, who play Tottenham Hotspur away in their next outing, but the Magpies will be encouraged by their performance here.

Man-of-the-match Wijnaldum was pleased to follow up last weekend’s 5-1 thrashing at Crystal Palace with three points here.

Asked what went wrong, the Liverpool manager said: “Everything”, and vowed to learn from a defeat that was “deserved and it hurts”. When confidence comes back, we have got good players, good, talented, young players.
