But Martin says that’s not the only thing to pay close attention to on Halloween. Mother Nature is also creating a scare for several parishes.

Plan a trick-or-treating route.
This year, Halloween falls on a weekend night, providing a greater opportunity for trick-or-treaters to stay out late and more adults to attend parties where alcohol and/or marijuana is offered. A few hospitals and schools allow children to trick or treat by going from room to room, virtually eliminating the dangers associated with being out walking on the street after dark. Options include getting help from a buddy, calling home or going to a safe neighbour. Decorate costumes and bags with reflective tape.

Police also remind parents to check the candy children collect, eliminating any candy that is unwrapped or that has a damaged wrapper. “Please” and “thank you” are classics for a reason – they work. If unsure, throw the candy out.

Costume masks can make it harder for a trick-or-treater to see. All costumes and masks should be clearly marked as flame resistant. You will want to stay away from a previously opened package or anything that has been punctured, as well as any homemade goodies; so save the treats for later and focus on enjoying the ambiance of the evening. Consider face paint or makeup as an alternative.

The village’s 11 p.m. curfew on Saturday for teens under the age of 17 will remain in effect on Halloween, but Boyle said, “that doesn’t mean parents can’t enforce their own, earlier curfew”.
