Newly elected Karachi Mayor, Dy Mayor take oath

The Sindh High Court (SHC) on Tuesday dismissed Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Faisal Vawda’s petition against newly-elected Karachi mayor Waseem Akhtar’s oath taking ceremony, stating that the respondent can not be disqualified until he is convicted in the case.

Faisal had also said that the real issue was that Waseem Akhtar’s leader, MQM chief Altaf Hussain, was a traitor.

Oath-taking ceremony of newly-elected mayor of Karachi, Waseem Akhtar is to be held after the court issued orders to shift the arrested mayor from jail to the venue for the ceremony.

Akhtar made it clear after taking oath that he wanted to serve Karachi and Pakistan and was mayor of Karachi not the MQM.

The dispute is about Akhtar’s functioning from behind the bar. The oath-taking ceremony which was attended by foreign diplomats, businessmen and political leaders was delayed for almost two-and-half-hours as Sindh High Court heard and dismissed at least two petitions challenging the right of Akhtar to take oath as Mayor of Pakistan’s biggest city and financial hub.

However, the court rejected the application.

Later speaking to media, Vawda claimed that the federal government was partnered with the MQM and “playing a game”.

“It’s misfortune that even a president and prime minister comes from jail to rule this country, and now the mayor is from jail who is facing many charges”, he said.

I am not going step back.
