Newton: ‘I’m not about to conform’
Much of the criticism directed toward Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton – at least beyond his abbreviated news conference – centered on his reaction to one of his two fumbles in Sunday’s Super Bowl 50. The newly crowned league MVP walked out on reporters Sunday after answering only a handful of questions, mostly with short, soft-spoken answers. I don’t know what you want me to say. Who likes to lose?

These critics are even criticizing his quote, “Show me a good loser, and I’ll show you a loser”. “It’s not a popularity contest”. But at least now the debate about why Newton didn’t jump on the football – arguably the most important moment of the game – can be put to rest. If he doesn’t want to partake in the press conference, then I don’t care about that. I never once offended anybody along that, but at the end of the day, we had an unbelievable season. Back before the Broncos kicked off the 2015 season against the Ravens, I wrote a piece on five predictions for the season.
“I’m human. I have never once said that I was flawless”. I am who I am.
Panthers coach Ron Rivera defended his star quarterback. “He still has the physical ability and the mental ability to go out there and be great, so I still think he’s got a little bit left in him”.
Newton said his emotions were raw after the game and he simply didn’t want to talk to the media. “And I am my own person, and I take pride in that”. Had Newton recovered the ball, the Panthers could’ve punted and perhaps had another chance at victory if their defense had forced a quick Broncos punt, which they’d been doing nearly the entire evening.
“I don’t think he’s going to retire”, Miller told DeGeneres. You’re really probably the second-best team out of 32 that year, but you come away from that game and feel like you’re 32nd instead of second.

“To me, to sit here and say, if you look at it, if you look at the performance in that Super Bowl, they are in the argument to be one of the best ever”, Elway said. Yet, in this, Cam also said that he doesn’t take losses well – especially when there’s so much on the line and so much invested.
