Newton on path toward Mexico’s border with Arizona

“This will keep the storm stronger for awhile, likely keeping it at hurricane strength into Wednesday”, said Moore, adding that after the storm makes its second landfall in northeast Mexico on Wednesday, it is expected to weaken to a tropical storm and even further to a tropical depression as it makes its way into Arizona.

At least two people have died due to Tropical Storm Newton, which is spreading heavy rains into Arizona and New Mexico on Wednesday after making landfall as a hurricane in Mexico’s mainland. The storm came ashore near Mexico’s Los Cabos resorts Tuesday morning as a Category 1 hurricane with winds of 90 miles per hour (150 kph).

According to the Associated Press, State Tourism Secretary Genaro Ruiz said at least 14,000 tourists remained in Los Cabos and noted that all flights had been canceled late Monday ahead of the storm.

It also knocked out power in parts of the resort, and a shrimp boat capsized in the Gulf of California killing two people.

The captain of the La Paz port, Jose Luis Rios, told reporters that two bodies were found on a beach.

Two people were killed and three others are missing after Hurricane Newton blasted the popular tourist destination region of Baja California in northwestern Mexico, authorities said Wednesday.

Police said five people were arrested for trying to loot two convenience stores in Los Cabos.

Vazquez said Newton’s winds took down trees and tin roofs from poorer neighborhoods but that a disaster was avoided because the hurricane went through rural, sparsely inhabited areas.

The weather system caused damage in the country’s south over the weekend before transforming into a tropical storm, flooding 1,400 homes in Guerrero state and leaving three dead in Chiapas. And Arizona and New Mexico are next.
