Newtown’s science teachers, identified, as Jason M. Adams was later arrested and charged with felony.

The 46-year-old teacher, Jason Adams, has a valid pistol permit, but CT state law prohibits possession of firearms on school grounds.

“This matter is very serious and troubling, both the Newtown Public School system and the Newtown Police Department took immediate steps to address the matter”, said the statement released earlier on Wednesday after Adams was arrested.

Adams is expected in court April 20, according to the Courant. The teacher was also placed on administrative leave, pending the school’s own investigation.

Adams, who was released to await trial, did not respond to a call seeking comment on Wednesday.

Police are confident that security precautions put in place prior to the incident were instrumental in the quick and appropriate response to the event, Chief Viadero added.

A gunman shot and killed 20 students and six educators at nearby Sandy Hook Elementary School in December 2012.

Police then investigated and charged him with illegal possession of a weapon on school grounds.

Police released a statement they received from the Newtown School District.

“This close working relationship between the school system and law enforcement personnel is essential in resolving incidents of this nature”, police said.
