Neymar, Brazil come out blazing in semifinals

The football match between Brazil and Honduras resulted in a 6-0 victory for Brazil and included what analysts are saying is the fasted football goal in Olympic history.

Whatever happens when the sides will meet in the gold medal match on Saturday at 22:30 CET, there will be a new Olympic men’s football victor, with neither a united Germany nor Brazil having won Olympic gold before.

Defender Marquinhos scored the fourth goal off a corner in the 51st, shooting from close range after the defense failed to clear the cross into the area, and Luan added another in the 79th after a ideal cross by Felipe Anderson. Luan made it 5-0 in the 77th minute.

“When we have a player like Neymar we have to be grateful because he’s the kind of player that pushes Brazilian football to another level”.

Neymar capped a fine display with his second of the afternoon from the penalty spot in stoppage time.

The hosts endured a hard start to the tournament as they were held to goalless draws by South Africa and Iraq, but have been firing on all cylinders ever since – seeing off Denmark and Colombia – and they were once more in impressive form on Thursday morning (AEST).

Neymar’s goal bettered Janine Becker of Canada’s women’s team, who scored with 19 seconds on the clock against Australia on August 4. “We are very happy to be in the final and to have a medal”. Neymar went through the interview zone without speaking, offering just a wave and smile to the throng of reporters. Wednesday was a different story.

“I am pretty satisfied, not only for the atmosphere but also because of my team”.

That six-goal mauling left a huge scar on Brazil’s footballing psyche and as the chants showed, fans in the host nation are desperate to get revenge if not on the full German side, then at least on a German side. In second half, even though we were down 3-0, we tried to attack more. The men’s soccer team survived, but Agatha and Barbara lost in the beach volleyball gold medal match to Germany. It would be the first Olympic medal for Honduras. But for most Brazilians, their attention was on one place and one place only – Maracana. “It is a shame, but we don’t deserve to be in the final playing like that”, he said. We realize this is not enough.
