NFL can wait: Alabama stars keeping focus on playoff
The fifth-year senior arrived at Michigan State as a three-star recruit and eventually blossomed into one of the best defensive ends in college football.

That’s more victories than the three remaining playoff teams – Alabama (35), Clemson (34) and Oklahoma (30) – over a three-year span. That’s not overachieving.
Michigan State offensive line coach Mark Staten had his unit watch and score the 1971 Muhammad Ali-Joe Frazier heavyweight title match dubbed the Fight of the Century. Translation: Do you want to sit behind all the five-stars stacked like cordwood in Tuscaloosa or see the field quickly in Athens? The hidden gem vs. crown jewel.
Some of the current Alabama players and coaches say that was the case last season when the Tide lost to Ohio State in the College Football Playoff semifinals – but they are certain it won’t happen again as they prepare for Thursday’s Cotton bowl against No. 3 Michigan State.
Whether that’s really an example of disrespect or not, Michigan State players are a little exhausted of hearing about Alabama.
MSU alumni Ron and Diane Posa have been waiting for the Spartans to make it to this stage for a long time.
Michigan State’s two All-American offensive linemen – center Jack Allen and left Jack Conklin – have made a mockery of high-school rating services. “Sometimes when you’re in the groove, and you’ve got to come out because it’s not your series, you feel like you want to keep going”.
“You have to have the mindset of it’s gonna be a 15-round fight and at any time, any punch could knock you out so you can’t relax, ever”, Michigan State co-defensive coordinator Mike Tressel said.
But with Dantonio in charge, there’s no need for any what-ifs around East Lansing. I wasn’t that. I knew I needed to work really hard.
The Spartans love being overlooked.
But here was perhaps the big key: The Sooners got some fast food out of the deal, because the staff couldn’t find anything else for them to eat during that delay that dragged on for hours.
“I’d nearly rather go into every game from here on out just being the underdog not talking about it”, Allen said.
All that talent is enviable, but it does come with some issues to be managed by Saban and his staff. “We found a way to win and we found a way to get to the bowl games and eventually we found a way to win the bowl games….”
“He played on the line with me at St. Mary’s, (there’s been) a healthy bit of chirping all in good fun”, Chris said. So was Vikings cornerback Trae Waynes, the 11th overall pick in last year’s National Football League draft.
Though the situation seems awkward from the outside, Smart said Saban had no reservations about having one of his coaches actively recruiting against him for a month.
“A lot of these kids when they’re looking at a school they want to go right where they’re going to play the most. And there were some pretty significant trips involved for families and fans and teams and players”, Saban said.
Stepping onto the practice field with the Crimson Tide for the first time can be both overwhelming and humbling.
“I thought I killed my coach”, Lawson said. We don’t have a lot of big name guys come out of high school.
“If he doesn’t like something he’s going to let it be known”, All-America linebacker Reggie Ragland said. “It’s obviously no fun when people don’t think you’re any good or don’t think you’re going to win”. He does not have a typical nose tackle build at 6-foot-6 and 275 pounds, but he is quick off the ball and powerful.
Michigan State: The Spartans have been on both the giving and receiving ends of some insane finishes in college football this season.

“I’m always ready to go in”, said Scott, who has 691 yards (which could be 2,073 if he were playing by Alabama rules). “I never know how it’s going to be, but I’m just happy when I’m in”.
