NFL Notes: Colts release tackle Gosder Cherilus

With Cherilus sidelined, it was Mewhort who took the majority of first-team reps at right tackle late in the offseason program (Joe Reitz saw some action, too, when Mewhort wasn’t participating).

The Colts hoped Cherilus would be healthy for training camp even as they plugged second-year guard Jack Mewhort into Cherilus’ spot during offseason workouts.

Right Tackle Gosder Cherilus’s time the Colts is over after two seasons and at least $12.3 million. The Colts knew that this was a real possibility and were prepared for it, and that very likely means that Mewhort is their new starter at the position.

“Colts released OT Gosder Cherilus, a big-ticket free agent import from a couple years ago”, Breer tweets. Cherilus had to have his knee scoped after being placed on IR due to what was reported as groin and shoulder injuries.

Cherilus was a solid addition to the roster in 2013 but played most of 2014 with injuries and was far lest effective.

The Colts also signed safety LaRon Landry and defensive lineman Ricky Jean Francois that offseason and none of the moves worked out well, although that hasn’t stopped the Colts from winning the division in each of the last two seasons.

At left guard, returnees Lance Louis and Hugh Thornton have both been starters for the Colts. That would open a void at left guard with several players competing, while Khaled Holmes and Jon Harrison will battle for the starting center job.

With Mewhort now expected to be the starting right tackle, the ripple down effect across the offensive line will be something to watch at camp. The Colts had serious doubts about Cherilus’ health.
