NFL roundup: Rams slip past Cowboys in first game back in LA

Bryant had two receptions for 28 yards, including a leaping catch on the sideline against cornerback Coty Sensabaugh for 18 yards.

Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo did not play, giving rookie Dak Prescott a chance to show his skills.

He certainly did. Prescott followed up Lucky Whitehead’s opening kickoff return for a touchdown by leading an 11-play, 80-yard drive.

First overall draft pick Goff made his pro debut with 9:45 remaining in the second quarter. Goff had two other passes dropped by rookie receivers Pharoh Cooper and Michael Thomas, and the California alum was sacked once.

Fowler, the Broncos’ No. 3 receiver and a key special-teams player, was injured while covering a punt during the third quarter of Denver’s 22-0 preseason win at Chicago on Thursday.

All eyes may be on Goff, but for now, Case Keenum remains the Rams’ starting quarterback. Neither Goff nor Fisher believed the injury was serious.

Rams Coach Jeff Fisher had said this week that the rookie would probably play about a half.

Two hours before the game, Irsay announced on his Twitter account that the Colts would wait until next week for Luck to make his first preseason start. He snagged six passes for 51 yards, including a touchdown.

It had been almost 22 years, and fans filled the stadium to near capacity to see the Rams play the Dallas Cowboys in an exhibition and to see No. 1 draft pick Jared Goff. Then he found Bryant later in the drive, as Dez climbed the ladder to snatch his first touchdown grab of the preseason, from 10 yards out.

LaMarcus Joyner was beat deep by Terrance Williams for 32 yard touchdown as well. They did draft tight end Tyler Higbee from Western Kentucky, which looked wise from the beginning and especially Saturday, when Higbee smoothly caught four passes in the first half. The tight end from Western Michigan was equally effective whether working split out wide, where he broke a tackle on a 14-yard reception from Goff, or on the line of scrimmage. Higbee didn’t get to show off his aptitude in the red zone, but looks like a valuable addition to an offense that lacks reliable options.

So much for the Dallas Cowboys’ backup quarterback controversy.

In an offense where the tight ends see the field a lot, Higbee would be a flawless fit alongside Lance Kendricks to help block for running back Todd Gurley. Joyner seems to be a better fit at nickel back, while Sensabaugh’s issues mean a starting cornerback job is nearly certainly E.J. Gaines’ to lose.

“Prescott”™s next drive was stalled when running back Darius Jackson came up short on third and 1.

A Dan Bailey field goal was eventually tacked on and Dallas was atop the scoreboard 24-7 at intermission and had many, no doubt realizing they just dropped a Ben Franklin on parking, wishing they could hand the Rams back to St. Louis. “It was like they clinched the playoffs, as far as they were concerned”.
