NFL Suspends 49ers’ Jerome Simpson For Six Games

“The probability of a suspension was known when we signed Jerome”, San Francisco general manager Trent Baalke said in a statement. Simpson is eligible to return October. 19, three days before the 49ers host the Seattle Seahawks. Simpson is eligible to participate in all preseason practices and games; however, the 49ers will need to find his immediate replacement before the start of the regular season.

Simpson (6-foot-2, 190 pounds) can continue to practice with the 49ers and play in their four exhibitions. It was the third off-field incident he had faced since 2012 when he signed a one-year deal with Minnesota.

Simpson has been in competition during training camp for the 49ers’ No. 3 job behind starting receivers Torrey Smith and Anquan Boldin.

“We are in full support of the NFL ” s decision, and look forward to Jerome ” s future contributions to our organisation”.

“I’m just blessed to be with this organization of people that stand behind me, really believe in Jerome Simpson”.

Simpson was a productive wideout prior to his off-field issues.

Simpson, 29, was signed by the 49ers in the offseason to a two year contract. Last year, the Vikings released him on September 18 after more off the field issues arose. “I’m just really committed to proving the people that are behind me right”.

“I looked at the schedule and will be a good game to come back on”, Simpson said. That case resulted in his 2014 suspension while with the Vikings. I just put everything on the table and told the truth.

Monday’s suspension is another blow to a roster that’s undergone major changes in the past year, and that includes the departures of three wide receivers: Michael Crabtree, Stevie Johnson and Brandon Lloyd.

“I have a good relationship with Jerome”, Kaepernick said, “as far as knowing how he’s going to run routes, the speed he’s going to run them with and ultimately being able to get the ball into his hands”. Excluding Simpson, San Francisco had 12 arrests involving seven different players since January 2012, most in the NFL. We have no real sample size from which to evaluate Patton, so that alone makes him a big victor in the aftermath of the six-game suspension to Simpson.

Plus, according to ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter, the league actually lowered the suspension from 10 games to six, purportedly because he did not play a down last season.

Now the 49ers have nine capable receivers who are not only competing for the position left up-for-grabs by Simpson, but they are also battling for the limited roster space heading into the season.
