The Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Choir s charity single, “A Bridge Over You“, outsold Bieber s “Love Yourself” to snatch the coveted festive top spot.
Call it a Christmas miracle, but it happened. A Bridge Over You beat Bieber’s chart-topper this week by 31,000 copies. Superb. That’s what Christmas is all about.
NHS Choir began trending after Bieber’s declaration of support and bookmakers started suspending betting. “Before we pulled the plug we saw a huge gamble on the NHS Choir so it is likely to be a popular result with punters”.
They told OfficialCharts.com: “We are absolutely overwhelmed and couldn’t be any happier!”
The choir said “it’s a brilliant celebration for the NHS across the country, so well done and thank you everyone”.
Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn added his support, tweeting: ” Fantastic news that @Choir_NHS are #ChristmasNo1 – NHS in our hearts all year round”.
“It’s just ridiculous that it’s the NHS versus Justin Bieber, but that’s all in the jolliness of it. You don’t expect an NHS choir to make the top 40 so to be honest, we’re [already] massively pleased”.
They continued: “A massive cheer for the NHS, thank you!”
Proceeds will go to several health-related charities.
“This is what it’s all about”, tweeted Bieber.
Choir members say they are thrilled at the reception “A Bridge Over You” has received.
‘There couldn’t be a more deserving group of winners’.
Bieber’s hit Sorry scored third place in the chart, while his song What Do You Mean came fifth.
