Later a full moon will make an appearance – the first time it has happened on Christmas Day in 38 years. A little earlier, Peake had wished all his followers a merry Christmas alongside a snap of Earth.

The Lewisham and Greenwich choir said they were “absolutely overwhelmed” that their song, A Bridge Over You, had pipped Bieber’s track, Love Yourself.

This year, the satellites’ infrared sensors have zeroed in on, you guessed it, Rudolph the Red-nosed Reindeer’s bright red nose. Relieved, she informed him that she would be leaving him food by her fireplace, plus treats for his reindeer as well.

The choir, which features physiotherapists, porters and administrators as well as doctors and nurses, were runners up on Gareth Malone’s BBC Two show Sing While You Work in 2012.

A few scattered showers are expected late into the evening, followed by a dry but cloudy Christmas day with a high of 46 degrees. In the valleys and along the coast, Alpine and Fallbrook topped the lists at 2.81 and 1.48 inches, respectively.

During his Twitter campaign to get the choir to the top of the chart, Bieber told his 72million followers: ‘I’m hearing this UK Christmas race is close… but the NHS Choir single is for charity.

The NHS Choir outsold Bieber by three copies to one, in the download market.

‘It’s a brilliant celebration for the NHS across the country so well done and thank you everyone for downloading and streaming.

Bieber, who now holds the number one spot with his single “Love Yourself” has another two songs in The Official UK Top 40 anyway.

Justin Bieber is putting his heart ahead of the chart. “So we have to send him a massive “thank you”.

With last year’s Christmas Number One – from X Factor victor Ben Haenow – having notched up 214,000 combined sales, 662 is a very narrow lead.

But barring a last-minute surge, this year’s X Factor victor Louisa Johnson is unlikely to have a look-in for the Christmas Number One.

Proceeds from the NHS choir’s single will go to health charities including Carers UK and Mind.

Martin Talbot, chief executive of the Official Charts Company said: “What a fantastic result for the NHS Choir to claim the 2015 Christmas Number 1. There couldn’t be a more deserving group of winners”.
