Nick Kyrgios to put Andy Murray bromance on hold for Wimbledon clash

Andy Murray won 7-5, 6-1, 6-4 on centre court, emphatically. If he plays well, and I’m not on my game, I can lose that match for sure.

The former world No.8 was saddened by comments from Kyrgios after the match in which he said he was “too soft” to win a grand slam and “doesn’t love tennis”. I thought I was playing some really good tennis.

“Obviously I try my best to win my matches and go as deep as possible”.

Johnson, the champion on grass at Nottingham this summer and playing in his first fourth round at a Slam, was comprehensively out-played in the first two sets.

Two brilliant backhands – a cross-court pass followed by a sliced shot to Kyrgios’ feet – got Murray to 0-40 and a third break point was taken when the 21-year-old netted a routine volley. He came on exceptionally well, he got in his head and he got Kyrgios to quit at times, ‘ he said.

“One week I’m pretty motivated to train and play”, he said.

“But if you want to continue to get better, then you speak and listen to as many people as you can and take on board the things you think will help you. I didn’t do that today at all”.

“Nick Kyrgios I think will struggle to be the greatest with an attitude like this”.

Andy Murray made short work of Australian Nick Kyrgios on Monday evening to advance to the Wimbledon quarter-final for the ninth time in a row.

“Boy, I expected Murray to win, but not in one hour and 39 minutes”, McEnroe said from his courtside commentary box.

It was one-way traffic by then and after having his serve broken again at 2-1 in the third, Kyrgios didn’t even bother sitting down at the change of ends.

Smith said: “Andy would have known what he was looking for in his coaching team and there’s no way he’d have approached Ivan if he didn’t feel there was something to gain from it, and it looks already [like that’s the case]”.

This was the most eagerly-anticipated match of the fourth round and the first real test of Murray’s title credentials. He backs me up a lot, which is good. To see that much talent, you want it to be utilised better – I just don’t think he is that type of kid.

“[But] I’m fully aware of how hard my next opponent is”.

“I mean at times, like I’ve previously said, I don’t love the sport”.

“It was a good first set”, mused Kyrgios.

“I m going to go out there and not do anything different”. Is that the greatest preparation?

This is, of course, Murray’s first Wimbledon as a father and he has been spending time with baby daughter Sophia on his days off. I don’t really know a coach out there that would be pretty down for that one.

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga is coming off a victory over Richard Gasquet in which he was forced to retire in the first set.

The last time they played at Wimbledon, in 2012, Murray won their semi-final in four sets but was reduced to tears in the final when Roger Federer claimed the title for a seventh time.
