Nicky Butt tips Angel Gomes for huge Old Trafford future

Nicky Butt has revealed that Manchester United ‘s youngsters are way better than he was at their age – with one in particular catching his eye. “If you’re not in the first team by 20, you’re not going to make the first team, so why have it at 23?”

The former United midfielder went on to explain how he believes that Rashford’s best position may well be on the left-wing, cutting in onto his right foot, as opposed to the centre-forward role he has more regularly occupied since his first team debut in February.

When asked if there is a resemblance to the Henry he said, “Yes”. Blistering pace. When Marcus runs at you, you can’t stop him.

Marcus Rashford is similar to Thierry Henry, but he is only likely to flourish if Michael Carrick plays.

“We’ve got some unbelievable players- Angel Gomes is a young talented player we’ve massive hopes for”. It came on the back of his injury-time victor for United after coming off the bench at Hull before the global break. Lee Sharpe was the best player in the country, as a youngster, but you couldn’t hold Ryan Giggs back much longer.

Marcus will get first team opportunities because he’s that good. Here it’s Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Wayne Rooney, Anthony Martial or whoever’s up top. If he keeps keeps doing what he’s doing with his pace and directness, you can’t hold him back.

His rip-roaring display led to Man United fans pleading for Rashford – who is yet to start under Jose Mourinho – to be included in the starting XI for the Manchester derby on Saturday.

A genuine concern for Butt is the frequency with which young players are picking up avoidable injuries as a result of their inability to fall properly – a legacy, he believes of their cosseted upbringings.
