Nicola Sturgeon to put education at centre of programme for government

Tens of thousands of Scottish nationalists are to fan out across Scotland, knocking on doors to find out if there is support for a new vote on independence that could make or break First Minister Nicola Sturgeon.

While nearly two-thirds of Scots (62 per cent) opted to remain part of the European Union (EU) in June, the United Kingdom as a whole voted to leave.

Her sensational claims come nearly two years after the September 2014 referendum where 55% of Scotland voted to stay part of the UK.

She said: “There can be no doubt that Brexit raises afresh the issue of independence. and second, important that the issue of European Union membership is, the case for independence is about much more than that”.

The box included many high profile politician including PM Theresa May; German Chancellor, Angela Merkel; Education Secretary, Justine Greening; Labour MP, Angela Eagle; leader of the Scottish Conservatives, Ruth Davidson; and leader of the Green Party, Natalie Bennett.

She will highlight 29 new or refurbished school buildings due to open to pupils during this academic year under the Scottish Government’s £1.8 billion Schools for the Future programme.

At the event in Stirling, Ms Sturgeon was to say “seismic changes” following the UK’s decision to leave the European Union will have a “deep impact” on Scotland that needs to now be addressed.

“And she would know that reheating the referendum debate will only add a further cloud of uncertainty over Scotland’s future, just at the moment when we need a government dedicated to security and stability”.

Scotland’s First Minister Nicola Sturgeon has spoken for the first time of her sorrow that she miscarried a baby.

Yesterday, she promised “a government acting in the best interests of all of Scotland – a government for everyone who lives here”.

The Tories are calling on Sturgeon to adopt their manifesto pledge to ensure all homes in Scotland meet energy efficiency standards before 2021 by increasing government spending in the area.

Her pitch today is that the case for independence has changed, and that she will not be seeking to win people over with the same lines used two years ago.

The programme lays out the Bills that are to be brought before the Scottish Parliament between now and the end of June next year, with Ms Sturgeon saying it represents the “hard graft” of turning the SNP’s manifesto from the May Holyrood elections into reality.

“If she was really listening, she would know that most of us don’t want to go back to another divisive referendum”.

Increasingly it looks more like a question of when, rather than if a new vote will take place in Scotland. “Scotland’s fiscal position is not a verdict on independence – it is an indictment of generations of Westminster government”.

Scottish Liberal Democrat leader Willie Rennie said the First Minister had “given up on anything but a second independence drive”.

“It is for Kezia to determine that because that is to be respectful of the autonomy of the Scottish Labour Party and the fact that there is devolution”. They must not waste the opportunity to transform Scotland for the better.
