According to the Guardian, last week Preet Bharara, a U.S. Attorney based in Manhattan, filed a complaint to take possession of Cage’s stolen skull.
To his credit, it sounds like Cage is fully cooperating with the authorities and is in the process of returning the skull to its home in Mongolia.
Both Cage and the I.M. Chait Gallery in Beverley Hills have been cleared of any wrongdoing as they were not aware it had been stolen.
While Herskowitz said he was surprised that Cage gave the skull to authorities, he said he understood the desire to do the right thing and cooperate with law enforcement.
The 51-year-old purchased the Tyrannosaurus bataar skull for $276,000 (A$382,000), unaware it had been stolen, ABC reports. Who wouldn’t star in The Wicker Man if it meant getting the cash to own a legitimate piece of actual dinosaur?
Nicolas Cage has agreed to return a rare dinosaur skull to the Mongolian government. Bahrara’s office has recovered over a dozen Mongolian fossils since 2012 and this includes three full Tyrannosaurus bataar skeletons.
In 2014 U.S. fossils seller Eric Prokopi was jailed including those of a Tyrannosaurus bataar, from Mongolia.
Cage is not being accused of wrongdoing, NBC reported.
The Tyrannosaurus bataar was a carnivore that lived almost 70 million years ago.
