Nigeria detains reporter over Boko Haram link

Journalist Ahmed Salkida, wanted by Nigerian authorities for his alleged knowledge of the location of more than 200 girls kidnapped by Boko Haram in 2014, was reportedly arrested.

A statement by the spokesperson of the secret police, Tony Opuiyo, said Audu and one other specialist in the making of Improvised Explosive Devise, IEDs, were arrested in Kano State.

Nigeria’s army declared Salkida a wanted man last month after he posted online a video from Boko Haram.

A Nigerian journalist with access to Boko Haram insurgents, Ahmad Salkida, has been arrested at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport on his arrival to the country, Sahara Reporters is reporting.

The suspect who is number 105 on the wanted list has been identified as Muhammed Bulama.

Their abduction triggered wide protests across nations, with a slogan, “Bring Back Our Girls”.

Mr. Salkida was released without conditions while all documents and devices confiscated from him were returned.

He had informed the DSS in advance that he planned to return to Nigeria after being declared wanted.

“Clearly, my status as a Nigerian journalist, who has reported extensively, painstakingly and consistently on the Boko Haram menace in the country since 2006 is an open book known to Nigerians and the worldwide community”, he said.
