Nigeria’s Buhari appoints committee to advise on corruption crackdown

The President, who spoke at the end of a presentation by the Ministry of Transport by the Permanent Secretary, Mohammed Bashar at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, said it was disappointing to find out that foreign loans obtained in line with signed agreements were moved from one project to another.

“It is important to remind the PDP Senate Caucus and all Nigerians that right from 2003 when he started campaigning for the Presidency of Nigeria, President Buhari consistently promised to do his best to curb corruption in the country”.

Buhari condemned the sourcing of loans and failure to utilize them duly, or diversion of any such funds without due process.

According to him, the ministry presented the programmes, projects and the reforms the ministry undertook in the last couple of years and the stages of the various projects, especially the railway rehabilitation programme as well as development at seaports.

He further explained regrettable cases of past governments and their failure to deploy various loans, leading to projects being abandoned or uncompleted.

He added that there was a clear need to streamline, harmonise, and prioritise on-going projects in the transportation sector. We have also recently commenced the operations from Kano to Port Harcourt and Port Harcourt to Gombe.

“With regards to Abuja-Kaduna, track has been completely laid and we are now waiting for locomotives to arrive, which have been ordered and paid for”.

President Buhari’s unwavering stance is that whosoever is charged with corruption should face the law irrespective of whether they are members of the of All Progressives Congress (APC), Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), or any other political party. The committee is to be headed by Prof.

The Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Mr. Femi Adesina, disclosed this in a statement.

Nigeria President Muhammadu Buhari defeated former president Goodluck Jonathan in a March presidential election after promising to tackle graft in the country, which ranked 136th out of 175 nations in Transparency International’s 2014 Corruption Perceptions Index.

The $5 million fund is to assist in the implementation of key components of the Action Plan and the work of the Presidential Advisory Committee.

Professor Bolaji Owasanoye, Nigerian Institute of Advanced Legal Studies will serve as Member/Executive Secretary of the Committee.
