Nigeria To Cut Gas Supply To Ghana Over Indebtedness

Nigerian government has on Monday threatened to cut gas supply to the Aboadze Thermal Plant in Ghana following the failure of the Ghanaian government to settle its indebtedness to the Nigerian gas authorities.

All of Ghana’s gas came through the WAPCo pipeline in 2014 from Nigeria, though this year the country now gets a few supply through Ghana’s Jubilee offshore oil and gas field, an official said.

Wireku-Brobbey told a Ghanaian news medium that contrary to expectation, the constant power supply in the country is not dependent on the incoming power barges from Turkey.

He assured that Ghana Gas has not and will cut gas supply to VRA even though the latter owes them huge money.

“The problem for us not the arrival or non-arrival of the power barges”.

Ghana receives as much as 90 million standard cubic feet of gas per day from Nigeria in the past month, Wereko-Brobby said.

“Ghana Gas has no relationship with Nigeria Gas”.

“Since gas started flowing through the West African Gas Pipeline, Nigeria has demonstrated that they cannot be relied upon to give us gas”, he maintained. They owe us more over $82 million and paid only about $10 million for the July supply.

If N-gas goes ahead to cut gas supply to Ghana on Friday, it would exacerbate the power crisis now confronting the country. That ispeanut to them so they do not have incentive to supply Ghana the required quantities of gas, especially when they have other thermal plants that are asking for gas.

The Managing Director said WAPCo is certain that those in positions of authority in the country are fully aware of the information and hope that they are taking appropriate action to prevent the curtailment, “otherwise WAPCo is contractually obligated to take deliveries to VRA as 12am Friday October 16 2015”.

He said in so doing N-Gas informed WAPCo of the intent of one of its major gas suppliers, Nigeria National Petroleum Company to curtail gas supply as a result of N-Gas being a payment default due to the inability of VRA to settle its gas supply and transportation invoices.
