Despite not qualifying from the group stage of the 2016 African Nations Championship, Nigeria’s Super Eagles gained a marginal three spots lift to the 63rd position globally in the January FIFA Rankings released yesterday.
With the current 20 best-ranked teams yet to play an A-game in 2016, the top 18 positions remain unchanged for the February edition of the ranking. Despite large periods of inactivity, Bafana Bafana moved up one place to in 73 position in the world rankings.
Cote D’Ivoire, down to 28th from 19th, still lead the continent however, with Cape Verde Islands, Algeria, Ghana, Senegal Tunisia and Congo lining up behind them.
The Eagles will have to improve in the rankings before the draws for the final round of the qualifiers for the Russian Federation 2018 World Cup is done in June. Brazil, Portugal, Colombia, England and Austria completed the global top ten football powers.
