“What we heard a lot about was the question of how the conditions in the north are deteriorating because of the threat posed by Boko Haram”.
Power was expected to visit the African region’s Multinational Joint Task Force, which includes troops from Cameroon, Nigeria, Chad, Niger, and Benin.
I underscored to these leaders that the United States is committed to partnering with Cameroon to defeat Boko Haram.
It stated that Power would engage with the Nigerian leadership and civil society in Abuja before traveling to the northeast to visit a settlement camp for civilians displaced by Boko Haram’s violence.
“The economic hardship in the region has been exacerbated by the presence of Boko Haram and trade across the border has now come to virtual standstill”. But he said intelligence suggests Boko Haram still hasn’t satisfied certain conditions set by the Islamic State for greater operational cooperation.
Power also “attended a ceremony to burn 2,000 tusks in a bid to end elephant poaching”, reports Reuters, adding that her trip included visits to Chad and Nigeria.
The diplomat said she and other US and Cameroonian officials visited the boy’s family following the accident to “offer our profound condolences and to express our grief and heartbreak over what the family is going through”.
Boko Haram is the most unsafe militant group in the region.
U.S. officials were unable to say whether their government will pay compensation to the boy’s family who lived in a village in northern Cameroon.
“Although the boy received immediate medical care from an ambulance in our convoy, he died shortly thereafter”, Ms Power said.
