Nigerian president meets rescued Chibok schoolgirl

Former president Goodluck Jonathan’s delayed response to the abduction and overall handling of the insurgency was seen as a major factor in his election defeat to Buhari past year.

It would be recalled that the Borno state government had claimed that the 276 abducted schoolgirls were in SSS3, and were about sitting for their WASC examination when Boko Haram abducted them. Her parents, like those of numerous Chibok schoolgirls, live in remote areas of Nigeria without internet access which led to difficulties confirming her identity. It was the first indication in two years that some of the girls are alive.

A spokesman for the army revealed that Serah Luka was released on Thursday and was among 97 women released by the Boko Haram group.

This question is at the heart of curiosity over the identity of the girl who was described as a JSS1 student by the army.

“Amina’s rescue gives us new hope, and offers a unique opportunity for vital information”, he said in a statement issued after the meeting. “We can rescue our Chibok girls”.

Idriss Danladi, a physician of Ali’s family told AP reporters that the woman was rescued by hunters at the forest.

“They are expending a lot of resources and time in the Sambisa Forest”. The list has two other young women sharing the surname given by the military and the rescued girl may have been visiting older sisters at the school the night of the kidnapping, said Bitrus.

Buhari came to power in 2015 after making the defeat of Boko Haram a key campaign promise. However, despite the Chibok case being brought to global attention through the #bringbackourgirls campaign and a number of false rumours of their release, the girls have remained missing. The African village is mostly inhabited by Christian people.

There have been increasing reports that Boko Haram forces are weakening, and the rescue of the 100 captives this week (a group of which one of the Chibok girls was part) appears to corroborate this. “However, this terrorist group remains a threat”.

Meanwhile, the Chibok Community in Abuja popularly called KADA on Thursday said they would not accept Mohammad Hayyatu as the husband of their daughter, Amina Ali Darsha Nkeki from Mbalala.

The army said he was “undergoing further investigation at (the) Joint Intelligence Centre” and was being “well-treated”.

Northern Nigeria, which is largely Muslim, is deeply conservative and kidnap victims have reportedly been shunned on their return home.

Through the years that Boko Haram has been terrorising Nigeria and neighbouring countries, militants have killed many children in attacks on schools.

Under Buhari’s command, and aided by Nigeria’s neighbours, the army has recaptured most territory lost to Boko Haram.
