The military operations came on the same day that Boko Haram abducted 16 women, including two girls, in neighbouring Adamawa state.
The member, representing Michika/Madagali Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Mr. Adamu Kamale, confirmed the abduction to The PUNCH on Thursday. Shekau himself is said to be in hiding in the Sambisa Forest area of Borno state, now targeted by the military.
“For me, the end has come”, Shekau said with a pale face in the poor quality video posted on Youtube.
It will be recalled, Shekau had been reportedly killed several times since the start of the insurgency only for him to reappear in video messages. “This message is just to reassure you that I’m alive and actually the one speaking to you”, he said in both Hausa and Arabic, according to the BBC.
“When you watch Shekau’s video, the message is clear: It is over”, responded a military source in Maiduguri, Borno State capital in northeast Nigeria.
“For this arrogant and boastful terrorist to speak in such a meek and subdued tone shows he has been trounced beyond his imagination”.
On Thursday, Boko Haram leader Abubakar Shekau purportedly released a video in which he predicted his own end and called on fighters to consider an introspection.
Other analysts said it might signal a leadership change for Boko Haram, which has been losing territory and is said to be running low on supplies.
In a statement by Colonel Sani Usman, acting Director, Army Public Relations he stated that in furtherance of efforts to make the North East safe and secure from the nefarious and criminal activities of the remnants of Boko Haram terrorists, troops of newly inducted 3 Battalion, 22 Brigade, in conjunction with Army Headquarters Strike Group (AHQ SG) and the Armed Forces Special Forces (AFSF), carried out a spectacular clearance operation on Tuesday, 22nd March 2016.

“The DHQ wishes to state emphatically that not minding the contents of the video clips, the Armed Forces of Nigeria would continue to fight in order to consolidate the successes recorded so far”.
