Night Tube service launches as police are called to just four incidents

London is playing catch-up to other big cities. Until now, though, getting home after midnight meant taking the bus.

Property demand across the initial night tube service is now at 25 per cent, with average house prices along the central London section of these lines reaching more than £885,000, nearly £300,000 more than the average property price for the capital. “People are really excited”, he said. “They are like the circulation system of a city”.

However, some workers – in health care and other sectors – will no doubt be disappointed if employers revoke the paid auto services sometimes offered to employees working overnight shifts.

The service expansion could also lead to around 2,200 new jobs, and up to 77 million in British pounds for London’s economy by 2029, according to a report by London First and EY.

“We must be vigilant to make sure the Night Tube doesn’t lead to anti-social behaviour”, Tower Hamlets Mayor John Biggs said.

The Night Tube is seen as a boost for revellers, tourists and shift workers, who on Friday and Saturday nights will now be able to travel on the network at any chosen hour.

It probably won’t take you long to get a full house. “Remember that the next time a politician promises, in exchange for your vote, he or she will have the system running 24 hours a day”, a caustic message on London Underground’s website read in 2003.

Tens of thousands of people have used London’s overnight subway service after it was launched in the early hours of Saturday, UK public body Transport for London (TfL) said in a statement.

Planning for the change was meticulous.

This followed a trial run the previous weekend with no passengers to test the logistics of running the services overnight.

During the dress rehearsal, cleaning crews sopped up chicken soup flung around the carriages to simulate vomit.

A new line called the Elizabeth Line, named for the queen, is expected to come into service in 2018.

Some regular riders have reservations. “We allegedly have 24-hour licensing but in many areas people have had venues reviewed and closed down by local authorities”.
