NIH Doctor Explains US Efforts To Combat Zika Virus
Babies born with microcephaly have small heads and brains, which often leads to lifelong cognitive impairment and disability. For an outbreak to occur, the CDC says, an Aedes mosquito must bite someone infected with Zika during the first week of that person’s illness, when the virus is in the bloodstream.

Beaumont travel clinics see a fair amount of workers across various industries preparing for worldwide travel, many unaware of the possibility of contracting the Zika virus, he added.
Rep. Hal Rogers, chairman of the House Appropriations Committee, said Republicans need more information before they approve the money to wage a war against the virus that is causing devastating birth defects. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention designated the Richmond lab as a Zika virus testing laboratory.
“If the mom potentially traveled and were outside of that window of potential exposure and the mom had no known symptoms then usually we would be more conservative in our management”, said Bennett. “The Lincoln County Health Department has also started preconception counseling on Zika virus for our family planning patients”.
Most people infected with Zika virus will not develop symptoms.
“We are doing all we can to target the mosquito that could transmit Zika here in the city, and building the capacity to respond to every possible scenario, no matter how unlikely”, de Blasio said.
Anyone traveling to an area where Zika virus is found can become infected.
At least 74 people in Washington state are waiting now for Zika test results, out of some 256 specimens submitted since January, said Dr. Scott Lindquist, the state’s epidemiologist for communicable disease.
Deer ticks in Wisconsin and Minnesota recently have been found to carry new species of Lyme and ehrlichiosis bacteria, which can cause fever, chills, muscle pain, headache, fatigue and other symptoms.
The transgenic mosquitoes are capable of restricting the breeding patterns of the Aedes Aegypti mosquito, and its ability to transmit ZIKV other vector-borne diseases. “But more importantly, Congress has failed to address a disease that has infected almost 700 Americans in 40 states, Washington, D.C., and 3 USA territories, including more than 65 pregnant women”, the letter read.
The Zika outbreak was first detected in Brazil previous year and is spreading through the Americas.
However, the chance that those mosquitoes will transmit the virus to people in Wisconsin this year seems slim, said Susan Paskewitz, a University of Wisconsin-Madison entomologist.
