Nike unveils new Oregon Pioneers uniforms for Washington State game

For the record, neither Lewis nor Clark is carrying a gun in the silhouette.

Nike has designed a few wild uniforms for the Oregon Ducks before, but its latest creation is by far its most unique. To highlight Oregon, the map covers northeastern and southern Oregon, as well as Eugene and Mount Hood. So much so with these new gray-based jerseys that every uniform is actually different. A handshake on the front bumper signifies the handshake found on the Indian Peace Medals that Thomas Jefferson provided Lewis and Clark to give to those they met along the path. The lines on the helmet represent the principal legs of the 2,200-mile-long Oregon Trail. Meriwether Lewis and William Clark introduced the nation to Oregon.

At a few point, Nike has to hit a point of diminishing returns with its creativity on Oregon football uniforms, but if there is an inevitable end, it will not be this Saturday.

In less-exciting Nike jersey news, No. 1 Ohio State announced it will wear its first black jersey October 17 when it hosts Penn State.

As you can see, the uniform does retain a few of the standard Oregon uniform elements like shoulder wings and the number font, and the O logo is still there, just this time on the back of the helmet.

The Oregon “Pioneers” uniform commemorates the state’s history with a nod to famous explorers Lewis and Clark, who blazed the Oregon Trail in the early 1800s. Nike instead chose a grayscale color palette inspired by vintage maps.
