Niners bring up ex-rugby star Jarryd Hayne from practice squad
Hayne officially returns to the active roster after being on the team’s practice squad for the second half of the season.

The 49ers placed guard Alex Boone on injured reserve with a slight tear of the MCL in his right knee, officially ending his season.
Kawakami noted that the 49ers have “no clue” on how to play Hayne, insisting that the team’s coaching staff has never wanted the Aussie in San Francisco. The 27-year-old, however, struggled once the regular season began, fumbling three times as a punt returner – including his first attempt in the season opener.
Tomsula, in an interview with San Francisco radio station KNBR, praised Hayne’s work ethic, but echoed McGaughey by saying the Australian “just needed to play football and get a feel of the running game”. “We ll consider going in with three or four, too”.
The 49ers can only take 46 players into each game so Hayne will have to survive that cut which is announced 45 minutes before kick-off.
Hayne could also see time in a banged up backfield.
The 49ers’ running backs have been hit by injuries, with their top running back in recent weeks, Shaun Draughn, suffering a knee injury in last weekend’s loss to the Cincinnati Bengals. Once he was waived through the league, Hayne was assigned to the 49ers practice roster.
Hayne, who was born in Australia and has a rugby background, signed with the 49ers as an undrafted free agent on March 3. The 49ers lost Carlos Hyde (foot), Reggie Bush (knee) and Mike Davis (hand) to injuries this season – Davis could return from IR Boomerang in Week 17. Kendall Gaskins is the other running back on the Niners roster.

Rather than recall Hayne earlier, the 49ers addressed their running back needs by signing Draughn, Pierre Thomas, Travaris Cadet and Harris, who they plucked Tuesday off the Baltimore Ravens practice squad.
