Nintendo announces Super Mario Run for iPhone and iPad this holiday

Nintendo has announced Super Mario Run for iOS devices, a “full-sized Super Mario Bros. action platformer”, planned to release December of this year.

Super Mario Run is now available on App Store at no cost, but isn’t available for download as yet.

The game has players tap to jump while avoiding obstacles in the Mushroom Kingdom. Nintendo announced that Super Mario Run would become available on iOS in time for the holidays while a version for Android would also arrive soon, according to Kotaku.

We do intend to release the game on Android devices at some point in the future.

“We have created Super Mario Run to be flawless for playing on your iPhone”, said Miyamoto.

Super Mario Run’s price (it’s free to try) is yet to be announced. Here’s what you need to know about the Mario Run release date on Android and iPhone.

The game will cost a set price (not yet known), and will be released on the App Store later this year – nearly certainly in time for Christmas.

In its press release, Nintendo reconfirmed that it would release mobile games in the Fire Emblem and Animal Crossing series by the end of March 2017.

In a surprising move, it seems that Japanese gaming giant Nintendo has finally turned back on its word that Nintendo IPs (intellectual properties, like game characters Mario, Zelda, etc.) will never appear on non-Nintendo platforms.

About the gameplay, Miyamoto said that they wanted to create a Mario game that you can play with one hand – in Super Mario Run, Mario automatically runs and players only have to jump. And now, Mario is running towards his next goal: “iPhone”, said Miyamoto. “We could not be more honoured that Nintendo chose to bring Mario to iOS first”, added Cook.
