Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto took the stage at the event and put Mario through his paces in a multi-level demonstration instantly familiar to millions of fans worldwide. Yes, all you need to do would be to make Mario jump, and that’s all. You can even play it one handed, while you’re holding onto the handle on the subway while eating a hamburger, or even an Apple.

“We have created Super Mario Run to be flawless for playing on your iPhone”, said Mr. Miyamoto, who first devised the Mario character more than 35 years ago. “I want everyone around the world to enjoy Mario, and they’ll be able to enjoy it on iOS first”. It will initially be released exclusively on Apple’s App Store in December for iPhone and iPad, with it following at a later date on Android. “But for gamers of all ages, the story just hasn’t been complete without Mario, so we are thrilled that Nintendo is bringing him to iOS for the first time this December”. Throughout the presentation, Nintendo showcased some of the game, which will let you collect coins, compete against other players, and create your own Mushroom Kingdom.

Morgan Stanley said in a note late Wednesday that the company will be able to reach a greater audience with the new game, which could lead to increased revenue in the future, according to Barron’s.

In terms of actual gameplay, Super Mario Run uses the same graphical style as the New Super Mario Bros. games.

Nintendo and DeNA partnered on Super Mario Run with Nintendo leading content and DeNA leading backend operations.

For years, Nintendo has refused to introduce its best-known characters to mobile platforms in an effort to protect its console business. But perhaps the biggest surprise of the event was the revelation that Nintendo is bringing a new Super Mario game to iOS.
