Nintendo Cracks Down on Pokémon Go ‘Piracy’

Pokemon Go is now out in the United Kingdom, which joins German, the US, Australia and New Zealand on the list of places with the official app.

Spotted by the Washington Post, Amazon Japan temporarily listed the release date of the wearable accessory Pokemon GO Plus as July 29.

“Google has verified that no other information has been received or accessed by Pokémon GO or Niantic”, it added.

This is not to say Pokemon Go is a record-breaker everywhere, mind.

John Hanke, the CEO of Niantic, the company behind Pokemon Go, explained that while they thought the game would be popular, they didn’t anticipate this level of interest.

For the new game, Nintendo has partnered with US-based developer Niantic and the Pokemon Company, which owns the rights to the characters.

The app now also asks, as many apps do, if the user would like Go to send them notifications, though the app does not immediately specify what those notifications will concern. This update addresses the security issues iOS owners faced last week when playing the game.

The game has taken off like nothing before, among young and old (no doubt as much about nostalgia as the game itself), with Pokemon being spotted everywhere from Downing Street to Tube train tracks.

“Pokemon GO” is such a huge hit that Hollywood studios are scrambling to get a movie deal out of the hype, Gamespot reported.

Be aware of privacy issues: In order to play the game, users must allow the app to access other applications, such as maps and camera. Around 60% of those who have installed the app in the U.S. are using it on daily basis, which means 3% of the entire Android users in the region.
