Nintendo designers reveal why Zelda games are frequently delayed

“I think there’s different reasons for delays”, famed developer Shigeru Miyamoto said. Since Breath of the Wild is such a huge departure all told, its success could spur more experimentation in the future. Not only does Breath of the Wild look to be an exciting open-world adventure in its own right, but represents an exciting new direction for the Zelda franchise.

Miyamoto says the development team always wants to give players something fresh to experience with Link and so the postponement of the release date is something that should be expected in order for them to make the best game possible. And the other is that the direction has been decided but putting that into reality – implementing that – is taking time. Why is it taking longer to create than most folks would like? “It’ll take us a year to do that much”. “It’ll take us a year to do that much”.

Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aimé has suggested that there will be “differences” between The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild on Nintendo NX and Wii U. “It just dawned on us that we’re not able to do that in this schedule. In this instance, we never really experienced this, so that’s why we had to delay it”.
