Nintendo gains more than Apple from Apple’s launch

Pricing wasn’t immediately available, but Miyamoto said that Nintendo will adopt a “set price” for Super Mario Run, instead of making the app free and relying on in-game purchases.

There’s no release date for the game just yet, but Nintendo says it will be out this December.

Super Mario Run gameplay has evolved into something more exciting and worth every penny.

“Super Mario Run represents the next phase of Nintendo’s expansion to mobile platforms, following the release of Miitomo earlier this year”, Nintendo explained in the release.

Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto took the stage at the event and put Mario through his paces in a multi-level demonstration instantly familiar to millions of fans worldwide.

In its time with Super Mario Run, The Verge commented that the game underscores the company’s strategy of introducing addicting, but modest experiences on mobile in order to win more players over with full-fledged console games.

Apple, Nintendo and game maker Niantic used the event to announce the wildly popular Pokemon Go would be available for Apple Watch users later this month. And now, Mario is running towards his next goal: “iPhone”, said Miyamoto.

As news of Super Mario launching on smartphones spread across the world, Nintendo’s shares rose from $28 each to $36 each.

Details are thin on the ground but Nintendo said: “We do intend to release the game on Android devices at some point in the future”, according to Kotaku. Nintendo has promised that an Android version is in the works, but iOS users will get first dibs on the Mario-themed endless runner. The game will also have a “Toad Rally” mode that will allow players to take on friends and strangers in a ghost challenge mode. Nintendo likes the stability and closed nature of the iOS platform, which should come to a shock to no one who understands Nintendo and how they do business. Till then though, the smartphone audience is too big to ignore.
