Shingeru Miyamoto, who created Mario 35 years ago, came onstage at the Apple’s event to announce the Super Mario Bro game, optimized to run on iOS.

Although we don’t have an exact price yet, we do know that Mario Run will have a set purchase price, going against Nintendo’s first two mobile games. Simple! It’s an easy way to play Mario on-the-go, with just one hand. Sure people may pick it up because it’s Mario, but if the gameplay doesn’t do enough to distinguish itself from other “runner” games, there’s absolutely no reason for people to stick around. Miyamoto showed off the “Super Mario Run” game, which had a retro 80s feel, to an adoring crowd.

Nintendo stated that it would launch Mario which is their biggest and most successful game character on Apple’s App Store this coming December. It’s a partnership destined for success and will likely see plenty of gold coins lining the pockets of both companies and more mobile games including those based on Animal Crossing and Fire Emblem will also be arriving by March 2017.

Super Mario Run is scheduled to release in December on iPhone and iPad.

The game will be broken down into the trademark Mario obstacle courses, each with a flagpole marking the end.

The 3.5mm analogue jack for wired headsets dates back more than a century, and it was time for someone to “break from the past and start pushing people into the future”, Creative Strategies analyst Tim Bajarin said after the event.

When Mario isn’t stomping on turtles and hopping across perilous gaps, he’s usually jumping into bold new forms of technology.

Super Mario Run represents the next phase of Nintendo’s expansion to mobile platforms, following the release of Miitomo earlier this year and the more recent Pokemon Go. The game has been developed with Miyamoto as lead creator for Nintendo.

Apple also said Nintendo’s uber-popular Pokemon Go mobile augmented reality game would be coming to the next version of the Apple Watch as well.
